Unlike the full-fledged version of Windows, which supports nine vernacular languages, the stripped-down, budget-priced operating system for India will be available only in Hindi. Hindi is India's national language and is widely spoken in most major states, but the country's diverse population also speaks close to 20 other local tongues, including Bengali, Marathi and Telugu. Windows XP Starter Edition Pilot Expands to RussiaSep 27 2004-Fourth market joins Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia as Microsoft brings the benefits of the most affordable, easiest-to-use version of the Windows operating system to people in developing technology markets.Russia is the fourth nation to participate in the Windows XP Starter Edition pilot program, which is designed for first-time desktop PC users in developing technology markets. The operating system will be available in Russia in early 2005. A fifth emerging technology market will be announced in the coming weeks. "We are confident in the success of this pilot program," says Olga Dergunova, general manager of Microsoft Russia/Commonwealth of Independent States. "A low-cost Windows operating system for first-time PC users will let a broader audience of beginners embrace the exiting world of IT technologies, develop new skills and expand knowledge to realize their full potential." Unchalee, an 18-year-old student in Bangkok, Thailand, goes to a school that has just one personal computer for every 30 students. Like many students in her school, Uchalee's family could not afford to have a PC at home, so school experience represented her only access to a PC. Last year, her one-hour-per-week introduction to computers was just enough to teach her basic computing skills, but it whetted her appetite for much more. Unfortunately, once she passed the final test for the course, she lost her one hour of access to the computer lab in order to allow other students to take the class. But now, with a Windows XP Starter Edition computer in her home, Unchalee is able to spend four to five hours each day on a computer, and can connect to the Internet -- opening a world of information to her right in her own home. Her older brother, who never before touched a computer keyboard, uses the computer every day, too, to search the Web and explore distant lands to which he'd like to travel. What's made this difference is a pilot program sponsored by Microsoft in collaboration with the government of Thailand. The program brings Microsoft Windows XP Starter Edition -- a localized, more affordable, easier-to-use version of the Windows operating system -- to first-time PC users in developing technology markets. The first three pilot markets for Windows XP Starter Edition -- Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia -- were announced on August 11, in collaboration with their respective governments and PC industry participants. Designed as a result of Microsoft's ongoing collaborations with international governments, the Windows XP Starter Edition Pilot Program is part of Microsoft's comprehensive commitment to enable individuals, communities and countries to gain access to the technology tools, skills and innovation they need to realize their potential. Windows XP Starter Edition will offer an affordable and easy-to-use entry point to the Windows family of products that is tailored to local markets, in local languages, and is compatible with a wide range of Windows-based applications and devices. Starting in October 2004, Windows XP Starter Edition will ship on new, low-cost desktop PCs available through PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Microsoft OEM distributors in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Language versions will be available in Thai, Malay and Indonesian. Windows XP Starter Edition will be the most affordable Windows operating system offered to date. The company is establishing a 12-month pilot phase to study and evaluate the benefits created for first-time PC users, software and hardware industry partners, participating governments, and Microsoft. After the 12-month pilot phase, Microsoft may introduce a local version of Starter Edition in additional developing markets in collaboration with governments committed to improving access to technology for their citizens.
