Stardock Releases WindowBlinds 6; Windows XP Gets Skinned

April 15, 2003-Stardock announced WindowBlinds 6 today. WindowBlinds is a program that extends the Windows user interface to be fully skinnable. Once installed, users can change their title bars, scrollbars, push buttons, Start bar, and virtually every other aspect of the Windows GUI using visual styles that the user can make or download from the Internet.
By default, Windows XP includes the new Windows XP visual style. WindowBlinds 6 extends Windows XP to support enhanced visual styles. There are thousands of enhanced visual styles available on websites such as
Go here for Windowsblinds 4.

WindowBlinds 3 and WindowBlinds 6 are programs that makes Windows into a fully skinnable operating system. It allows users to apply visual styles that skin virtually every aspect of the Windows GUI (title bars, radio buttons, check boxes, scrollbars, explorer backgrounds, and so on). It is the Microsoft certified way of adding more visual styles to Windows XP. WB visual styles can be used on Windows 98, ME, and 2000.
Version 3.3 is a major redesign that provides global bitmap caching, which dramatically improves performance while decreasing resource usage on all versions of Windows.
There's no radical changes here . . . at least, not on the surface. Don't look away, though - the coders haven't been sleeping at their keyboards. Users of 3.1A complained about speed, so behind the scenes, Stardock have worked some fancy tricks to improve it. WB 3.2 cut the time to load windows by about 2/3, and 3.3 improved performance even further, so there's no more waiting for windows to appear - you can feel the difference instantly. A lot of the rough edges (like options not working with UIS1 skins) have been smoothed off, giving it a more "finished" feel. For those on XP, there are now a lot more skins available to support the new features offered (the recent "GUI Olympics" produced over 100 new skins, including several real gems), and a few additions to fill in some of the gaps. There's more of those UIS1 skins around, too, offering increased performance and compatability. Then there's the innumerable small fixes that get put in build after build. I'm supposed to put a comparison with competing products here. The only one I can think of is MS Visual Styles. This has three big disadvantages compared to WB. Firstly, it doesn't change - the only way you're going to get a new version is with a new version of Windows, and that gets expensive. WindowBlinds has improved a lot, and it's set to improve even more in coming months. Secondly, it's not as flexible. You can't have windows stick on top or roll up at the click of a button like with WB, nor can you have window and button animation, resized borders, have scripted buttons, etc, etc . . . and thirdly, it only works on XP. The advantage of it is that, if you *have* XP, you only have to use a program to crack the protection MS put to stop people changing skins to use it. Of course, there are reasons it was put there in the first place, and they're not just related to MS's profit margins, but it's an option. Don't think it'll be any faster for having MS do it, though - tests (if you believe them ;-) show WB has a big lead over VS in the critical areas of moving and resizing windows, sometimes approaching the speed of Windows without any skinning at all. So, if you liked the look of 3.1A, but didn't like the speed, look again - it's gotten a whole lot faster. If you haven't tried out WindowBlinds before, here's your chance to make Windows look the way *you* want - be it as simple as having the XP look on 98, or a futuristic interface by some of the best graphic designers on the web. It's worth your time looking at, and at this price I think it's worth buying, too. After all, $20 hardly breaks the bank.

Windows Blackcomb Skin Fully supports user colourisation and XP features - click the squares to reveal rollup and ontop. Includes "Blackcomb Dark" subskin. WB 3.2 or later recommended on XP for large panel support, 3.4 for all features.

Cursor FX Cursor FX integrates tightly into Windows, providing you with additional tabs on your Mouse control panel in order to access additional features. You have many options available to you via the 3 tabs provided by Cursor FX.
The first is to improve the look of your cursor. Through use of alpha blending, transparency and other effects CursorXP allows amazing graphical cursors, both static and animated.
You can also add special effects, which can be activated on a variety of actions such as clicking. Different effects can be attached to different actions.
You can also add trial effects that follow your cursor as you move it. With windows you could only add a cursor ghost, but Cursor FX provides much more flexibility.
Cursor FX comes with several themes built in, changing your theme is easy. All you need to do is to select your choice of theme from the dropdown list, and click ‘Apply’ or ‘OK’.
Before Cursor FX there was little visual excitement to be achieved through moving your cursor or clicking buttons. Cursor FX brings a range of special effects that can be associated with button clicks, and much more than the standard Windows cursor ghost.

DesktopX is a revolutionary new program that makes it possible for users to build their own desktops. Use it to create more productive, more useful, more secure or just plain cooler looking desktops.
Rather than replacing the Windows shell (Explorer), it extends Windows giving it new object-oriented abilities. Users can easily create their own DesktopX objects or download the thousands available on the Internet. DesktopX allows users to secure their desktop and access COM objects installed on their system as if they were natively part of the desktop. It brings next generation object technology to your desktop today.
DesktopX can replace the Start bar, system tray, and task bar should the user wish to as well as everything on the desktop. DesktopX objects can be used in place of Windows icons or used side by side with them. Unlike Windows icons, each DesktopX object can be any size and any shape and more importantly react to messages from the system (such as mouse over, program launching, and custom user events).
Because DesktopX objects are true objects, unlike Windows icons, they can be easily animated to react to different messages as well as display visual information on what they are meant to represent without the need to have what it represents opened. A typical example would be a DesktopX object representing ones email program that could change its appearance or make a sound if there is email waiting to be downloaded without having the email program loaded. The object simply responds to an OS message that there is email waiting and changes itself accordingly.
