Microsoft Drops Pricing on Xbox 360

Microsoft has done what some said they would not do, and what some said they would do, how’s that for making sense, they have dropped the price on the Xbox 360 by $50. Better still, if you live in Canada, they are dropping the price of it by $100!

Microsoft Lowers Price of Xbox 360 by $100 in Canada Price drop coincides with release of “Madden NFL 08″ on Xbox 360, one of many titles that make up the greatest holiday lineup in video game history.

Microsoft trims Xbox 360 price by $50 Although rumors of the price cut had swirled since last week, Microsoft didn’t make the deal official until late yesterday. Even then, the company did not tout the $50 cut as much as highlight how long it resisted discounting the machine. “The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360,” said Mitch Koch, a vice president in the entertainment division’s sales and marketing group, in a statement.

Xbox 360 System update They also released an update to Xbox Live to allow you to use some wireless guitars that are coming out.

Madden NFL 08 Side-By-Side PS3 And Xbox 360 Comparison Game Videos compiled some footage of Madden NFL 08, which you all know by now has one distinct difference between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions ? the PS3 version will run at 30 frames per second, while the 360 version will run at 60.

Halo 3 themed Xbox 360 Don’t forget about the Halo 3 themed [tag]Xbox 360[/tag] coming out in September.

360 Cores and Premiums with HDMI? An inside source spills the beans According to my source, Microsoft wants to cut through all their existing inventory of hardware. They will then quietly “soft launch” a new version of the Core and Premium hardware in late August or September that will include an HDMI port. It’s also expected that this new hardware will feature the 65nm process for the CPU and quieter DVD drives. The new hardware will ship in boxes very similar to what we saw on store shelves now, but there will be a small “call out” on the box so you know you’re getting a system with the HDMI connection.

Xbox360 Achievements.org has posted the achievements that will be available for Halo 3. There are 49 achievements worth a total of 1000 points. Check the full list here. 9 missions with a skull for each, achievements for beating the game on normal, heroic and legendary and many more.

I almost forgot, yesterday I red an article that said Microsoft paid Take 2 50 million dollars for exclusive episodic content for the Xbox 360 for Grand Theft Auto IV. 25 million for content that will come out by March of 2008 and another 25 million for content that will be released later that year. GTA has a huge following so they are trying to pull in more gamers to the Xbox 360 side with extra content for GTA IV. This is surely a good way to do it, exclusive content for your favorite game might persuade you to pony up the money for a new system. Either that or someone will find a way to port it to the PS3.

Todays Tech 6/1/2007

Lots of interesting stuff to read.

Encryption vendor claims AACS infringes its patents, sues Sony Certicom has done extensive work in elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), and the patents in question build on this work. The patents have already been licensed by groups like the US National Security Agency, which paid $25 million back in 2003 for the right to use 26 Certicom patents, including the two in the Sony case. Now, Certicom wants Sony to pay up, claiming that encryption present in several key Sony technologies violates Certicom patents on “Strengthened public key protocol” and “Digital signatures on a Smartcard.”

Computer crime has shifted from a game of disruption to one of access. The hacker?s focus has shifted too, from developing destructive payloads to circumventing detection. Now, for every tool forensic investigators have come to rely on to discover and prosecute electronic crimes, criminals have a corresponding tool to baffle the investigation. This is antiforensics. It is more than technology. It is an approach to criminal hacking that can be summed up like this: Make it hard for them to find you and impossible for them to prove they found you.

Halo 3 News and Nuggets

Halo 3 is fast approaching, tomorrow, more than a million Xbox 360 owners will be able to play an advance version of the system’s biggest game of 2007, Halo 3. Last Friday, a very select few were allowed to play it in a Manhattan nightclub. The beta will consist of three levels the sun-beaten Snowbound, the waterfall and forest area Valhalla and a military-base setting called High Ground. The writer at mtv.com says there are three things everyone must do when playing Halo 3.

“Get a kill with the Spartan Laser. It is the most satisfying thing you’ll ever do.

“Make sure to grab the rocket launcher on high ground. For some reason no one ever gets it. And it’s absolutely lethal on that stage. No one’s figured that out.

“Make sure you ride in a Mongoose [ATV] with someone, so you can bond in your weaponless bullet-sponge of a vehicle.”

Is there anything you can really accomplish with that last one?

“Just chattin’,” O’Connor cheerfully replied. That might be the only moment of “Halo 3″ calm available in the next three weeks. Source: ‘Halo 3′ Sneak Peek: Three Things Every Beta Player Must Do

Here is a listing of some of the new weapons and devices that will be available.

The powerful Spartan laser can be used to stop vehicles. This directed energy weapon’s battery conservation scheme requires user to “paint” its target during a brief charge lag. A zoomed scope will assist in aiming. It’s slow, but one of the most powerful portable armaments in the UNSC arsenal.

A bubble shield creates a Sue Storm-like protective bubble around you preventing weapon fire. Its spherical shape is large enough to protect a small group, but users, or more importantly, enemy troops, can pass through it on foot or in vehicles.

A portable gravity lift propels you airborne to strategic heights and hard-to-get spots. The GravLift emits a column of directed anti-gravity force — a Covenant technology whose physics may be borrowed from Forerunner scavenging. This device is a simple but effective means of giving materiel or troops a quick vertical lift.

Man Cannons are stationary air lifts at certain locations which propel you to different locations. They can “shoot” men or vehicles.

Spike grenades can be thrown to stick onto opponents and the environment. New defensive tools include energy drainers and trip mines.

The Mongoose four-wheeled ATV holds two Spartans.

A new game play mode called “VIP” makes one player on a team the most important target — the team can’t be defeated unless he?s snuffed out.

Two new single-use items that can be used offensively or defensively include the Energy Drain and Tripmine. Energy Drain is a short-range magnetic induction effect causing disastrous failure of powered field systems within a set radius. It also has a damaging effect on biological systems and can wound or kill most bipeds. Basically, if you see it, get away quick.

The Tripmine reacts to pressure or movement. It has a slight magnetic impulse that will attack it to vehicles, turning them into deadly traps, or it can be placed on the ground to take care of careless interlopers. The mine has two states — inactive and active — learning to see and hear the difference can be a matter of life or death. Source: Fans can take a shot at ‘Halo 3′ online for brief time

Gears of War COG Tag Strategy Videos

Major Nelson has posted some blog posts about some strategy guides they have for sell on Xbox Live, this one, BradyGames Gears of War COG Tag Locations strategy videos (5) is for Gears of War Cog Tag locations. Lots of comments on that post, mostly how there are already guides available for free, online and in video form, as a matter of fact, I posted one the other day, Gears of War COG Tag Video Guide. And I have also listed some websites that list the locations, so save your points for a game you can play or something, plus, I have reposted the cog tag guide below.

This webpage, Gears of War Guide (Xbox 360), Gears of War Walkthrough lists the numbers of cog tags by level and by section, example:

ACT 1 12 cog tags
14 Years After E-Day 3 cog tags
Trial By Fire 2 cog tags
Fish in a Barrel 1 cog tags
Fork in the Road 0 cog tags
Knock Knock 1 cog tags
Hammer 2 cog tags
Wrath 0 cog tags
China Shop 3 cog tags
They have listed specific locations on their Walkthrough portion of this guide

This webpage, COG Tag List, and it doesn’t have any advertisements on it, just straight information.

ACT 1
Prison area
COG Tag 1 – Right after you make your choice of paths (I chose
training) there is a tag straight ahead under the Gear logo. Can’t miss it.

COG Tag 2 – In the room where the locusts cut through the door. If you
are looking directly at the door they cut through, you can find it back and to
the left. It’s under the stairway across the room you came down.

COG Tag 3 – As you exit the above mentioned door into the courtyard,
there is a stairway to the left. Run up the stairs and turn left right at the
top. The COG tag is in the near side corner (if enemies are North, it would be
in the SW corner of the patio area.

Lots of great and free information on the internet, should always search before you buy any strategy guides for any game.

PC Games on the Rebound and GRAW and GRAW2

It’s not all about consoles anymore. PC Games are making a comeback, personally, I’ve always liked the PC games better, for the most part, games like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 and Gears of War are definitely better on the consoles, like the Xbox 360, but games like Age of Empires, Civilization, etc are much better on the PC. A nice write-up in the Nytimes, PC Games, Once Down, Show Signs of Rebound, that talks about one of the most popular PC games of all time, World of Warcraft, and how it is helping bring a surge in PC Games sales again.

Not so long ago, PC titles were the mainstay of video gaming, but they have slumped in recent years, overshadowed by a new generation of game consoles. Now they are showing signs of a comeback.

Most prominent has been the strength of one of the most popular video games ever for PCs, World of Warcraft, a role-playing online adventure game that now has more than eight million subscribers.

But retail sales of other titles are on the rebound as well. PC manufacturers and chipmakers are promoting the game-playing prowess of ever more powerful computers. And Microsoft has inaugurated a program aimed at making PC gaming more attractive, incorporating console-like features and easier online play.

Another thing that is helping is better online play, like with WOW, and Microsoft is integrating PC gaming into Xbox Live, calling it Games for Windows – Live. Under Windows Vista, Vista evaluates the computer and gives it a system score that they can use to look at video games in the store to see if it will run well on their computer or not, to help ease the frustration of being a brand new game only to realize it will not run well or at all or their computer. They are also allowing games to use their controllers that come with their consoles, using a simple $20 adapter, so you can use your Xbox 360 controllers to play a PC game, something I have been wanting to try out. So, the barrier to playing PC games has really fallen, helping spur PC game sales.

I just added over 100 Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 Videos, as well as a bunch of the original Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, or GRAW2 and GRAW as they are sometimes referred to. Some are listed below. More after the jump.

Halo 3 Beta Date Announced

They have finally announced the release date for the much anticipated Halo 3 beta program. The beta will debut on Xbox Live on May 16th at 5AM, and if you haven’t gotten in on the beta yet, there is still a chance. Buy yourself, yes, I said buy, a specially marked copy of Crackdown or by the rule of three, meaning you played three hours of Halo 2 online, I believe.

We know you’re crazy for Halo 3 news, and here it is. The multiplayer Halo 3 beta will debut on Xbox Live, May 16th at 5AM. (Can I call in sick 5 weeks in advance?) How do you get on that beta? Either through the “Rule of Three” promotion or buying a copy of Crackdown for Xbox 360.

This is your chance to get to try new levels, weapons, vehicles, and try out some new game types. Maps shipping with the beta include Snowbound, Hugh Ground, and Valhalla – all new to Halo 3. Try your hand at the new Mongoose ATV, and gun-up with the new and improved Assault Rifle, Brute Spiker, Spike Grenades, and the killer Spartan Laser. Source: Halo 3 beta data announced – are you in?

Sounds really good, kotaku has some more info.

The Beta itself consists of three maps – Valhalla, High Ground and Snowbound – graphically improved since our first MP screenshots – and all three will be playable in Matchmaking only (that is after all, what we’re Beta testing here). All three maps are suitable for a wide variety of gameplay types, and you will have the chance to try all manner of game types, familiar and new.

There will also be new guns, vehicles and gameplay features to try – including the mysterious “X-Button” functionality.

There are a number of new features you’ll get to test out – including a new grenade type, a completely different class of weapon and some of the enhanced online functionality we plan to bring to the game – but it should be noted, a lot of secret features are hidden in this Beta.

You will see frame rate skips, unfinished animation and graphical features that will change come Fall. All the footage is clearly marked Alpha. You’re looking at the features here folks, not the final quality bar – which we’ve set pretty high. Your next taste of that will be in May. Source: Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta Dated

Here is a video I downloaded from Bungie.net showing you some of the features. They have a higher quality video on their site and an HD version on Xbox Live you can watch on your console.
