Gears of War 2 Trailer, Theme and More

Gears of War 2 will be released in November of this year by Epic Games and, even though I probably won’t get to play it much, I’m already excited. Check out the trailer and other goodies already available below.

From our little video section.

GDC – Gears Of War 2 from Joy Stiq on Vimeo.

Providing a dramatic close to Microsoft’s 2008 Game Developers Conference keynote address, lead designer Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games announced that the heroic saga of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad will continue exclusively on Xbox 360 this fall withGears of War 2.

This highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Gears of War delves deeper into humanity’s struggle for survival against the nightmarish Locust Horde, and takes the high-definition visuals to a whole new level.

“To our team the original game was just a tease, the appetizer to the Gears of War characters and new style of gameplay. We were so amped to get to the next chapter, and dig deeper into the universe of this franchise,” said Bleszinski. “Gears of War 2 is an even bigger, better, and more badass experience than the first game, and we can’t wait to get it in the hands of eager gamers this November.” Source: Gears of War 2 Announced

Here is the teaser trailer from

Major Nelson posted this on his blog, they have released a theme for Gears of War 2 to use on your XBox dashboard, it is called “Bare Your Teeth” Theme. They also have the trailer available to watch on your XBox 360, it is called “Duel” Teaser Trailer (HD).

CBS to Broadcast Video Game Matches

Here is something I have been waiting on, maybe my kid can be famous kicking ass in video games..

Tomorrow at noon, CBS, the august home of the Masters and March Madness, will become the first broadcast network in the United States to cover a video game tournament as a sporting event.

And so, along the bottom third of the screen, Mr. Gordon had added six fat red health meters, like digital fuel gauges, reflecting the fortunes of the game?s players. For anyone actually playing the game, the same information would be conveyed by just a few minuscule pixels tucked in a corner of the screen.

?We need to add the health bars so TV viewers can understand what?s happening,? Mr. Gordon said. ?Otherwise, forget it.?

Other assists for those unfamiliar with gaming will include explanatory boxes on screen (?Iceblock: a spell that encases a player in ice, protecting him from enemy spells?), play-by-play announcers and hosts, like Greg Amsinger and Susie Castillo, better known, respectively, for college sports shows and MTV?s ?Total Request Live.?

The producers have even tweaked some of the games? rules to make them more viewer-friendly. For example, in Guitar Hero II, players are normally scored on how accurately they pretend to play the notes for various rock anthems. But for the broadcast, a score from a showmanship judge has been factored into the result. Naturally, the crowd goes wild. Source: Video Game Matches to Be Televised on CBS

Here is a local kid who kinda got famous playing WOW and making his buddies mad, hehe.

Xbox360 has posted the achievements that will be available for Halo 3. There are 49 achievements worth a total of 1000 points. Check the full list here. 9 missions with a skull for each, achievements for beating the game on normal, heroic and legendary and many more.

I almost forgot, yesterday I red an article that said Microsoft paid Take 2 50 million dollars for exclusive episodic content for the Xbox 360 for Grand Theft Auto IV. 25 million for content that will come out by March of 2008 and another 25 million for content that will be released later that year. GTA has a huge following so they are trying to pull in more gamers to the Xbox 360 side with extra content for GTA IV. This is surely a good way to do it, exclusive content for your favorite game might persuade you to pony up the money for a new system. Either that or someone will find a way to port it to the PS3.

WOW Addons and Vista

Have seen quite a few searches by people having problems running World of Warcraft while running under Windows Vista, so I am dedicating a post just for that. They mostly concern running world of warcraft mods and addons.

From all that I have read, if WOW is installed in your program files folder, it can cause problems with Windows Vista because of some caching that can mess it up. For best results, install WOW outside of your program files folder. Also, make sure the addons are still enabled in the Blizzard UI by clicking on the addons button.

It should not matter what your OS is, this should have no affect on your addons or other WOW mods, unless you have had to re-install them. As you may have noticed using Windows XP, when you use the Windows zip program, the default behavior is to expand the files into a folder of the same name. So, if you are extracting a folder called CT Raid, it will actually extract it into another folder called CT Raid. So, if WOW is looking inside the CT Raid folder, it will only see another folder called CT Raid, it will not see any of the required files. So, this could be part of the problem users are having. When installing addons, it would probably be best to extract the zip files into My Documents and then copy over the actual folder with the programs to the addons folder, thus avoiding any of the extra folders.

There are also some issues posted on the WOW Forums concerning Windows Vista:

Vista may do a few things that are out of the ordinary when you installed it in the C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files (x86) folders – it may either not apply your settings or it won’t delete them properly.

* Resetting settings or settings that does not apply properly – Vista may deny you write access from the World of Warcraft folder if it is installed in the Program Files folder. You can remedy this by either right-clicking the game and selecting “Run as administrator” or to move it outside of the Program Files folder.

* Settings and mods that won’t stay deleted – If you installed the game in the Program Files folder, Vista may redirect the game to look in another set of folders: c:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\World of Warcraft\
It will save all of your custom configurations there instead of the C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft folder. You can delete your settings by going to the folder above or moving the game outside of the World of Warcraft folder. Source: Windows Vista from the WOW Forums

Todays Gaming News

Here are a bunch of gaming news articles or blog posts from today and the past day or so.

Valve hardware survey shows gamers yet to embrace Vista In terms of operating systems, Windows XP again led the pack with 93 percent. Only 5.27 percent of respondents had upgraded to Windows Vista, with the rest on Windows 2000 or Server 2003. The low uptake of Vista even among high-end gamers will undoubtedly make some developers rethink whether or not to invest heavily in DirectX 10, which is Vista-only. Many gamers reported that they tested Vista but went back to XP for various reasons?when DirectX 10-capable graphics cards become more mainstream and Vista graphics drivers achieve higher levels of maturity, the Vista numbers should increase.

Blizzard announced that Starcraft II is coming, finally, at the Blizzard World Wide Invitational event in Korea, they have not announced an official date, but say that what they have is already playable in multiplayer, they know it’s really late now, even on their website they say it’s about time!

StarCraft II continues the epic saga of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. These three distinct and powerful races will clash once again in the fast-paced real-time strategy sequel to the legendary original, StarCraft. Legions of veteran, upgraded, and brand-new unit types will do battle across the galaxy, as each faction struggles for survival.

Halo 3 News and Nuggets

Halo 3 is fast approaching, tomorrow, more than a million Xbox 360 owners will be able to play an advance version of the system’s biggest game of 2007, Halo 3. Last Friday, a very select few were allowed to play it in a Manhattan nightclub. The beta will consist of three levels the sun-beaten Snowbound, the waterfall and forest area Valhalla and a military-base setting called High Ground. The writer at says there are three things everyone must do when playing Halo 3.

“Get a kill with the Spartan Laser. It is the most satisfying thing you’ll ever do.

“Make sure to grab the rocket launcher on high ground. For some reason no one ever gets it. And it’s absolutely lethal on that stage. No one’s figured that out.

“Make sure you ride in a Mongoose [ATV] with someone, so you can bond in your weaponless bullet-sponge of a vehicle.”

Is there anything you can really accomplish with that last one?

“Just chattin’,” O’Connor cheerfully replied. That might be the only moment of “Halo 3″ calm available in the next three weeks. Source: ‘Halo 3′ Sneak Peek: Three Things Every Beta Player Must Do

Here is a listing of some of the new weapons and devices that will be available.

The powerful Spartan laser can be used to stop vehicles. This directed energy weapon’s battery conservation scheme requires user to “paint” its target during a brief charge lag. A zoomed scope will assist in aiming. It’s slow, but one of the most powerful portable armaments in the UNSC arsenal.

A bubble shield creates a Sue Storm-like protective bubble around you preventing weapon fire. Its spherical shape is large enough to protect a small group, but users, or more importantly, enemy troops, can pass through it on foot or in vehicles.

A portable gravity lift propels you airborne to strategic heights and hard-to-get spots. The GravLift emits a column of directed anti-gravity force — a Covenant technology whose physics may be borrowed from Forerunner scavenging. This device is a simple but effective means of giving materiel or troops a quick vertical lift.

Man Cannons are stationary air lifts at certain locations which propel you to different locations. They can “shoot” men or vehicles.

Spike grenades can be thrown to stick onto opponents and the environment. New defensive tools include energy drainers and trip mines.

The Mongoose four-wheeled ATV holds two Spartans.

A new game play mode called “VIP” makes one player on a team the most important target — the team can’t be defeated unless he?s snuffed out.

Two new single-use items that can be used offensively or defensively include the Energy Drain and Tripmine. Energy Drain is a short-range magnetic induction effect causing disastrous failure of powered field systems within a set radius. It also has a damaging effect on biological systems and can wound or kill most bipeds. Basically, if you see it, get away quick.

The Tripmine reacts to pressure or movement. It has a slight magnetic impulse that will attack it to vehicles, turning them into deadly traps, or it can be placed on the ground to take care of careless interlopers. The mine has two states — inactive and active — learning to see and hear the difference can be a matter of life or death. Source: Fans can take a shot at ‘Halo 3′ online for brief time
