Gears of War 2 Trailer, Theme and More

Gears of War 2 will be released in November of this year by Epic Games and, even though I probably won’t get to play it much, I’m already excited. Check out the trailer and other goodies already available below.

From our little video section.

GDC – Gears Of War 2 from Joy Stiq on Vimeo.

Providing a dramatic close to Microsoft’s 2008 Game Developers Conference keynote address, lead designer Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games announced that the heroic saga of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad will continue exclusively on Xbox 360 this fall withGears of War 2.

This highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Gears of War delves deeper into humanity’s struggle for survival against the nightmarish Locust Horde, and takes the high-definition visuals to a whole new level.

“To our team the original game was just a tease, the appetizer to the Gears of War characters and new style of gameplay. We were so amped to get to the next chapter, and dig deeper into the universe of this franchise,” said Bleszinski. “Gears of War 2 is an even bigger, better, and more badass experience than the first game, and we can’t wait to get it in the hands of eager gamers this November.” Source: Gears of War 2 Announced

Here is the teaser trailer from gamevideos.com.

Major Nelson posted this on his blog, they have released a theme for Gears of War 2 to use on your XBox dashboard, it is called “Bare Your Teeth” Theme. They also have the trailer available to watch on your XBox 360, it is called “Duel” Teaser Trailer (HD).

Commodore Gaming Machines Are Back?

Commodore Gaming MachinesWho would’ve thunk it? Commodore is looking to get back into the computer business by creating a line of gaming machines, looking to compete with the likes of Alienware or Hyperion and others who make custom gaming rigs. They will debut the line in Germany on March 15, 2007 at Cebit, and attendees will get the first shot at trying them out. They also promise some surprises.

“25 years ago, Commodore launched the best selling personal computer of the late 20th Century, the C64, and defined the early computer games experience for millions of people worldwide,” said Bala Keilman, CEO for Commodore Gaming. “We are privileged and excited to bring the Commodore brand back to the gaming community and mark a new chapter in its history with this exceptional machine. We’re sure that it will deliver what gamers need and want.” Source: Commodore returns with new gaming PCs

I don’t know how good they will be, or how well received they will be, but it certainly is interesting, I myself never owned a Commodore 64, I had a few Atari computers instead, but, I will certainly check one out the first chance that I get. If someone at Commodore wants to send me an evaluation unit, I will certainly try it out.

Firefly MMORPG Coming

I posted this on the RealTechNews site, Are You a Browncoat?, they are going to make the quickly canceled Firefly TV series into a massive multi-player online game, in the theme of Star Wars Galaxies, but hopefully, not the same, or at least not as bad as their reviews have been.

Canceled in the United States after only 11 episodes, Firefly has become the Star Trek of 21st-century sci-fi fandom: a show that seemed to remake the genre even as it stayed faithful to the conventions of “hard” science fiction, like engine room problems and menacing hordes lurking on the edge of known space.

What made the show special was the wry, often self-deprecating humor of its characters, from the captain with the checkered past to the unwittingly sexy engineer, the dull hunk of a mercenary with a girl’s name, and the mysterious young woman passenger with special gifts.

The online version will move away from those central characters — after all, there’s only one Mal Reynolds. In an MMORPG, “everybody has to have their own story,” says Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges. Source: Wired

That is what makes some of these games not as good as you would expect, even though the characters are what drove the show and why everyone liked it so much, you can’t play them online, because there is no way thousands of people could play the character and interact with the other characters, it just wouldn’t be manageable, so you end up having to create your own character and the main characters end up being the NPC’s etc, and loose their luster. Still, it will probably be worth checking out, someone, someday will make a good one that is really worth playing while remaining true to the show.

Here is a great comic on the subject, from www.reallifecomics.com.

Playstation Mod Chip Seller Hit with Million Dollar Suit

If you have been into gaming for very long, or do much research on the internet, then you’ve known about mod chips for awhile, whether you actually know what they do or how they work is another story, but I’ve seen ads all over the place. Anywhere from $50 to a couple hundred dollars you can get a mod chip, or even have them installed and they will let you play copied games in your console, Xbox, PS1, PS2, Xbox 360, Gamecube, etc, and the newer systems with the hard drives, you can copy complete games to the hard drive and play them from there. Making it very easy to rent a game, copy it to your hard drive and never having to rent or buy it again. Well, three such mod chip sellers are paying the price as Sony has accused them of violating the DMCA and they are charged with $9 million in damages.

Mod chip seller Divineo and two other defendants are on the hook for over $9 million in damages after a federal court judge found that they had violated the DMCA by selling mod chips for consoles. The defendants were accused by Sony of trafficking in mod chips as well as the application HDLoader, which allows owners of the PlayStation 2 console to rip and store PS2 games on a hard drive attached to the system.

Divineo is a company based in France that sells parts, accessories, and until recently, mod chips for the Xbox, Xbox 360, PSOne, PS2, GameCube, and other systems. Source: arstechnica

They had to know it was coming eventually, these people cost these gaming companies money, and they don’t like that. Most companies loose money selling the consoles and make up the difference in selling the games for them, something they can’t do if people don’t actually buy them.

Buyer and seller beware.

  • This list is for gamers who want to get the most for their money. If you don’t play games but surf the Internet and edit video, the cards in this list are probably too expensive. On the other hand, if you’re a professional full-time 3D designer, you should look at Quadros and FireGLs, not gaming cards:
  • Prices change and deals come and go on a daily basis. We can’t offer up-to-the-minute pricing information, but what we can do is list some solid cards that you probably won’t regret buying – if you can find them at the price ranges we suggest;
  • The list is based on some of the best U.S. prices from online retailers. In other countries, or in retail stores, your mileage is most certainly going to vary;
  • These are new card prices. No used or open box cards are in the list; they might be a good deal but it’s out of the scope of what we’re trying to do.

Nice, and you know they did the behind the scenes work to go with it, I haven’t even read past the first page, and there are 7 pages total, if you are looking for the info to go with the list.

Dell Joins the Overclocking Crowd

Speaking at this weeks CES in Las Vegas, Michael Dell has entered the overclockers club with the latest version of their XPS desktop.

Speaking to a crowd at the Consumer Electronics Show here, the Dell Computer founder showed off a new gaming PC that includes several high-end components, including a “factory overclocked” 4.26GHz Intel Pentium Extreme Edition.

Dell’s Limited Edition XPS 600 Renegade, which is expected to be available this quarter, also includes four Nvidia graphics processors in an airbrushed fiery red case designed by Michael Lavallee.

This thing looks SWEET! I’m sure it will be way to expensive, and the AMD crowd is already jumping all over it in the comments section of the news.com article.

Click here for a large pic, and click here for the video of Michael Dell introducing the Limited Edition XPS 600 Renegade.
