Windows NT 4.0 support ends today
Jan 01 2005-As of today, Microsoft's no fee support and non security hotfix support ends. So, what do you do now?
Well you need to think about upgrading to atleast Windows 2000 or even better, Windows 2003. Some of Microsoft's biggest customers have asked for longer support, saying they can't finish the upgrade until 2006...
"Some of our large enterprise and public sector customers have told us they need until 2006 to complete the Windows 2003 upgrade," said Peter Houston, senior director of Windows Serviceability at the Redmond, Wash., company. "To ease their migration, we have decided to run the custom support program through Dec. 31, 2006, and charge the same amount as we will in 2005. This will provide customers up to two years' support while migrating."
"Windows NT Server 4.0 was developed before the era of sophisticated Internet-based attacks, and it has reached the point of architectural obsolescence. It would be irresponsible to convey a false sense of security by extending public support for this server product."
So, if you haven't started upgrading already, then you better start now, new exploits and security holes are being found everyday, and soon, Microsoft may not be providing fixes for the public. Microsoft is getting better at fixing their problems, but I am sure, that won't be true of Windows NT 4.0 very soon.
